One of the best kept secrets on the Atlantic Coast, Margate City is a beautiful, beachside residential community located in Atlantic County just south of Atlantic City between Ventnor City and Longport along Highway 109 on the banks of the Great Egg Harbor River.
Residents of the community enjoy beautiful and safe beaches, a fishing pier, extensive recreational facilities and a wide variety of cultural events. Just minutes from the excitement and entertainment of Atlantic City, the community offers a mix of restaurants, nightclubs, shops and attractions. Margate’s clubs and pubs on Washington Avenue have long been a popular spot for nightlife. The world's most famous pachyderm lives in Margate City. Lucy the Margate Elephant is a building in the shape of an elephant, complete with a canopied seat called a 'howdah.' Six stories high and built of wood and tin, it was constructed in 1881 by real estate developer James V. Lafferty to draw prospective buyers to his holdings. It has served as a real estate office, a residence and a tavern over the years. More than 11,000 residents call Margate City home. The housing market offers a wide variety of choices. One-bedroom condominiums and townhouses can be found starting at around $50,000. Newer, beachside units can go for as high as $500,000. Single-family homes start at $200,000 and range up to $1.5 million and more for large estate properties fronting the Atlantic.
